Walking Dead #49 Review

Seeing as how this is my favorite comic book, I decided to review this great book and maybe catch a few new readers. I only started getting back into my old hobby a few months ago, and it's like I never left. There is great stuff to be read.
For those in the dark, this book is about zombies. The main character Rick was a policeman injured in the line of duty. He wakes up in an abandoned hospital to find the world in chaos and the dead coming back to life. His fist goal is to find his wife and son. The book is about survival, and what people do when everything they know has changed, and most of the people they knew are trying to kill and devour them.

I won't spoil too much for anyone planning to try and read more about this series. But lets just say a group of survivors were taking refuge in a prison from the zombies. It had everything: a secure location, food, and peace (for the most part). But other individuals wanted the prison for themselves. Hence, conflicts ensued. This issue follows the aftermath of said conflict.

We start with Michonne, a loner type character, finding the aftermath of the battle. She learns what she can from the mess and follows a set of footprints. Rick and Carl, his son, are on the run. We get back to one of the strengths of the series, which is just people moving from place to place, finding supplies and what they can to keep going. In true horror movie fashion, the zombies can be anywhere, and they appear right when the characters start to feel safe. We see a few surprises in this one. There isn't much time to reflect on what happened that made them leave in a hurry, so this issue is straight forward. We find out at the end that one of the main characters has to worry about his health more at this point than the zombies. And the suspense level raises when you see who has to take care of him.

As far as artwork goes, it is high quality like always. There is a great page with Michonne taking care of a former friend/lover. We know that know one is safe in this book, but after what she's gone through she deserves to stick around the longest. I also loved a solid page that showed Rick and Carl fighting off a zombie in close quarters. Great issue, I would give it an 8/10 for being fast paced, but telling the reader what they need to know at that point.
